In 2022, calendars and desk-top calendars made a comeback, including contributions from MacDermid, Komori, and DuPont. Veepee Graphic Solutions also joined the fray with their tribute. Jai Chandra, VeePee’s managing director, describes viewing the calendar pages as a “happy pill,” a thousand-year-old ritual offering a warm, comforting feeling. Amidst the complexities and pressures of the print business, he sees these creations as a refreshing antidote. In the Sunday Column, Chandra discusses Veepee’s decision to produce the 2022 calendar.
Veepee Graphic Solutions, based in Bengaluru with plants in Pune and Hyderabad, is a flexo pre-press specialist. They were the first Indian trade shop to go multinational, establishing a facility in Sri Lanka in 2016. The calendar aimed to showcase that flexo printing can match or exceed the quality of offset printing, especially for folding cartons. The calendar featured metallic finishes, anti-counterfeit features, and embellishments with varnish and foil, demonstrating flexo’s ability to replicate gold and silver sheens without metallic inks. Despite initially printing 750 copies, high demand proved this was insufficient. The entire project, from brainstorming to final printing, took about four months, involving the selection of images, and designing security patterns and embellishments.
